Master of Business Administration in Electronic Commerce (MEC)
 

Objectives:  This program provides the opportunity for professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in electronic commerce (E-Commerce) that is essential part of today's information economy. On completion of this program students should have understanding of the current Internet environment and future direction, theories and practices appropriate for electronic commerce. This degree will develop in-depth knowledge and skills of wide range of areas that can be utilized in various aspects of electronic commerce such as electronic publishing, communications, developing multimedia, networking, marketing & sales, advertising, change management, education, training and research. The carrier objective could be the following but not limited to: Web Developer, E-Marketing and Sales Manager, Systems Analyst, E-Business Manager & Internet Consultant.

Admission Requirements:

Minimum BA/ B. Com/ B. Sc or its equivalent.

Degree Requirements:

 

  • Completion of 42-54 credit hours.
  • Passing all courses individually and maintaining a minimum CGPA of B (3.0).

STA 512 Statistical Decision Making

The course is designed to equip the student with statistical tools and concept to be used in the decision making process. The topics of the course include measure of central tendency, measure of dispersion, probability distribution and their application in the management decision process, testing hypothesis, regression, correlation and introduction to parametric statistics, survey methods, sample design and sources of business static sin Bangladesh.

 

MGT 515 Management and Organizational Behavior

The course introduces applied behavioral sciences to the study of people at work in organization. The course deals with individual and group behavior models in the context of different organizations and social system. It deals with the basic concept of motivation, perception learning and analysis of human behavior, individual difference and job satisfaction, attitude change, group process, team work, role theory, power and authority, along with the analysis of small group behavior, group dynamics, leadership, conflict and managing change, development of the organization and the influence of group.

 

ACT 511 Financial Accounting

Financial accounting is concerned with recording, presentation of financial data generated by a business unit in a framework of convention accounting procedures. Will cover basic concepts in accounting, balance sheet & profit and loss account, double entry system and ledger account procedures, preparation of balance sheet and profit and loss account from the ledger, accounts of limited company, ratio and performance measurement, cash flow statement, valuation and performance measurement, control of accounting system, IT application.

MEC 620 Overview of E-Commerce

This is an introduction of E-Commerce. This course involves the background study of Information Communication & Technology (ICT). This course highlights the basic concepts in relation to the use of computer and computer-based information systems in a business environment. The course also provides students with an understanding of fundamental e-commerce issues. Topics include understanding ICT tools as an aid in business management, traditional commerce & e-commerce. History and definition of e-commerce.   Introduction of Internet, Intranet, Extranet & WWW. Business opportunities will be examined now available through Internet. 7/24 concepts. Impacts of e-commerce on traditional business models. International e-commerce. Basic concepts of e-commerce hardware, software, tools, online transaction processing. Basic web site development issues.

 

MEC 621 E-Commerce Strategy

On completion of this course, students will have sound knowledge of developing e-commerce strategies. The course explains how company uses Internet to create new products and services and improve many other standards business activities. It will describe how e-commerce fits with economic structure in which business operates. Business trends & E-Commerce objectives. Corporate mission & goals, virtual organization & IT mission & web-based commerce mission The topic includes strategy to select e-commerce hardware and software, online payment systems and security. MEC 622 Information Systems Across the Enterprise

This course deals with an integrated view of information systems management. The course will cover the following issues: Strategies for technology-enablement through people (STEP) model. The information enabled manager (IEMgr). Information enables management across the enterprise. Assessing strategic opportunities. Different models for information management, Nolan's six stage, the strategic Grid and Benefit matrix for information management. Assessing strategic opportunities, Integrated strategic IS planning. MEC 623 Internet Communications & E-Commerce Systems

This course provides an understanding the interpersonal communication practice and the communication opportunities now available through the Internet. This course examines the relationship between information communications technology (ICT) and contemporary commercial and political culture. The topics include cross-cultural issues  & technology, interpersonal communication for the information industry. Communicating in a network world, ICT and work practices. Impact of IT on contemporary society, economics and politics. Social consequences of work practice by the growth of ICT. Organizational and managerial communication, local & global economics, politics & ICT. Aspects of managerial communication for the information industry. Notions of online communities, technology and freedom, technology and services such as media, health & finance. MEC 624 E-Marketing

On successful completion of this course, the student will familiar with the concepts, principles & issues and Internet strategies of e-marketing and developing e-marketing plan. Topic includes analysis and managing e-business, e-buyer behavior, mapping the e-market system, e-commerce competence, e-market positioning and competitive advantage, selecting e-strategies and constructing an e-plan. E-commerce innovation, e-promotion, e-pricing and e-distribution, the evolution of e-management systems, e-souring, e-business and institutional marketing and e-service marketing. Developing Internet strategies and justification how these strategies consistent with e-marketing principles. Prerequisite MKT 514 & MEC 620.

MEC 626 E-Commerce Environment & Ethics

The main objective of this course is to examine ethics and e-commerce professional conducts issues that arise for companies conducting e-commerce. The course will examines the impacts of e-commerce to professional’s standards & responsibilities. After completion of this course students will have a sound knowledge of identifying   professional ethics and socio-economic issues of e-commerce.  Topics include employees, employer, workplace, society, privacy right & obligations. International and tax issues discusses the challenges posed to business by differing language, culture, laws and infrastructure when the conduct e-commerce across international borders. Prerequisite MEC 620.

 

MEC 627 Legal Environment of E-Commerce

The main objective of this course is to understand the regulatory environment of e-commerce systems. The course will examines how international environment impacts on a country’s domestic legal framework. This course will address how existing laws and new laws apply to the e-commerce. This course will deal with the following:

Social impact and legal nature of e-commerce.

Procedures involved in developing and publishing a website.

Factors to be considered in choosing a domain name.

Legal issues involved in forming an online contract.

Regulation and online transactions protection.

Consumer protection issues in the Internet.

Privacy considerations regarding the Internet and how these can legally be addressed.

Fundamentals of intellectual property law and the issues involved in applying this law to digital technology.

Online liability.

MEC 628 Internet Security and Risk Management

The course covers nature of security concerns surrounding Internet and e-commerce systems. The risks faced by firms engaging in e-commerce are covered as well as procedures for protecting and managing such risks.  Topic includes security issues, techniques and tools, such as encryption, digital signatures, certification authorities, firewalls and their implementation to protect online business. The role of independent third parties involves protecting and risk management will cover in this course.  Prerequisite MEC 620.

 

MEC 629 E-Commerce Solutions

The objective of this course is for students to achieve in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of e-commerce solutions. This course gives students familiarity of how systems are developed for e-commerce models in order to achieve the strategic goals of the organization. Practical work will include the use of high-level development tools (e.g. Macromedia) for web applications. Topic covers including the methodologies of Web Information Systems (WIS) development, system analysis and design process, including documentation as would occur with the design of WIS. Investigation of application software available for electronic commerce systems and developing electronic commerce software evaluation framework. Developing a prototype. Prerequisite MEC 621.

MEC 728 E-Commerce Technology

On completion of this course, students will have in-depth knowledge of infrastructure of e-commerce technologies. They will learn how technologies work to achieve for successful business through Internet. The topics will cover electronic commerce infrastructure/architecture, WWW & Internet architecture, public & private networks, VPN, ISP, VANs etc. Internet protocol suit OSI/ISO, packet-switched networks, TCP/IP Internet protocols, layers & algorithm. MEC 729 Web-Based Programming & Integrating E-Commerce Systems

This course will introduce step-by-step guidelines that e-commerce professionals need to know to putting the business on the web. On completion of this course, students will know how they can build up a fully functioning e-commerce site. Topics included designing a web-based application for online selling. Presenting  & structuring the online store and creating a database for supporting e-commerce. Order processing & designing the pipeline using commercially available services for facilitating credit card transactions. Deploying site to ISP and developing a customer support in an online environment. Prerequisites CIS 518 & MEC 521.

 

MEC 730 Business-to-Business E-Commerce Systems

The aim of this course is for students to gain a practical understanding of the concepts and technology underlying electronic trading between business to business (B2B). Students study electronic trading systems, the organizational impacts of these business processes and people, infrastructure requirements, including communication networks, technology and application integration of funds transfer. The course is designed to provide a good understanding of the field of investments opportunities, making sound investment decision, and recognizing where investment problems and controversies arises and knowing how to deal with them. The contents will cover, risk and returns, operation of the marketing, modern portfolio theory, capital market theory, CAPM models and its extensions, equities, government and corporate debt, merger acquisition and buyouts, options, futures market, the stock market crisis in Bangladesh (1998).

MKT 723 Consumer Behavior

PREREQUISITE MKT 661. A study of motives, attitudes and decision processes of the industrial buyer and ultimate consumer. The sociological and psychological foundations of market place choice are analyzed including life style, social status, age, income, taste, habit, custom, fashion, self-concept, and opinion influence. Individual and group influences, brand loyalty and consumerism are studied.

 

MKT 725 Advertising & Promotion Management

PREREQUISITE MKT 661. Provides an apprehension of the principles and practices of advertising and key decisions necessary for sales promotion. Topics cover include social context of promotion, role of communication in marketing, behavioral concepts, values and functions of advertisement, product and market analysis for advertising ideas, advertising media, testing, advertising effectiveness, message design, economic and financial criteria and development of promotion program.

HRM 724 Organization & Conflict Management

PREREQUISITE 515. The strategies and methods of managing conflict will be studies against social structures. Management of group and inter group processes will be covered from an organizational context. It will also explores the use of power and politics in the management processes and analyze the decision making process of different organizations.

MGT 723 Entrepreneurship Management

PREREQUISITE  MGT 515, HRM 680, & FIN 660. This course will be a study of the process and skills involved in new business creation and its effective management. Essentials of planning a new business, choosing ownership form, sources of financing, evaluation of alternative business plans, analysis of business functions to get started are included. The course will deal with principles of management; project costing, feasibility, evaluation, planning, and scheduling, and controlling PERT, CPM, resource scheduling, materials management, and psychology on administration. Course contents will also cover theory and practice of construction operations, equipment utilization and construction methods, construction safety, construction equipment and plan. Analysis of cost, optimizing techniques used in managing civil engineering project.

 

 

Group B: MEC 750 Thesis: All MEC students are required to undertake supervised study and research culminating in a thesis in their field of specialization. The completed thesis should be bind and printed in accordance with the regulation of IBAIS University.
