Bachelor of Arts in Tourism and Hotel Management

The primary objective of the Bachelor programmeme in Tourism & Hotel Management is to produce skilled manpower and competent personnel well trained to meet the demand of the Tourism sector. Since, Tourism is the profitable sector both for Private and Government undertakings, there is a high demand world-wide for professional education in this sector. Responding to this demand, IBAIS University has recently entered into a collaborative arrangement with Bangkok University an institution known for its rich academic standard for this kind of Professional Education. Under this collaboration students will study 1st & 2nd year in IBAIS University. After completing 1st and 2nd year (65 credit hour courses) in IBAIS University, students will be awarded an Associate Degree in Tourism and Hotel Management by IBAIS University. And after completing 3rd & 4th year (Rest 65 credit hour courses) in Bangkok University, students can finally get the Bachelor Degree from Bangkok University. Or else, students who will not transfer their credits to Bangkok University can finally get the Bachelor Degree from IBAIS University. In order to maintain International standard, we directly follow the curriculum of Bangkok University as well as it is also designed to fulfill the demand and necessity of our National interest.

The programmeme focuses on hotel operational skills, management practice in the tourism and hospitality industry. It also offers a variety of exciting activities to enrich students' educational experience including local and overseas training. We have full-time lecturers and professionals who are experts in various sectors of the tourism and hospitality industry, to provide individual academic and professional training advice.

Admission Requirements:
SSC & HSC/3 "O" Levels and 2 "A" Levels. Minimum qualifying GPA to be eligible to apply is 2.0.

Degree Requirements:
§ Completion of 44 courses and Dissertation (135 credits).
§ Passing all courses individually and maintaining a minimum CGPA of C (2.5).

This Bachelor Degree programme is subdivided as follows:

After completing First Year and Second Year (65 credit hour courses), an Associate Degree will be awarded in Tourism and Hotel Management by IBAIS University.

· Third Year-Junior Year
· Fourth Year-Senior Year

After completing First, Second, Third & Fourth Year (135 credit hour courses), Bachelor Degree will be awarded in Tourism and Hotel Management by IBAIS University.

Humanities and Language

IEN 103 Critical Reading
Emphasis on applying critical inquiry skills to varied and challenging reading materials. Included analysis, synthesis, and evaluation written discourse.

IEN 104 College Writing
This course is designed to help students develop their writing, reading, and thinking skills. Emphasis is on the writing process. Through inventing and elaborating ideas, drafting, revising, and editing, students write in a variety of contexts for a variety of purposes. These purposes include description, narration, exposition, and argumentation.

IEN 105 Communicative English
This course develops students' communicative competence through effective integrated use of language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will learn how to give discussions, presentations, speeches, and to participate in debates.

ILB 100 Study Skills
The development of study skills in higher education, in terms of time-managing, note -taking, reading-skills, report writing and library usage.

ILB 107 Ethics
A study of metaphysical and ethical background, idealism, materialism, naturalism, existentialism, ideal aim of life, and ethical standard. The practice of solving current ethical issues, and social responsibilities of individuals are included.

ILB 108 Critical and Creative Thinking
A study of logical thinking, process of reasoning, the structure of deductive and inductive arguments, syllogism, enthymeme, basic symbolic logic, induction by enumeration, and Mill's methods. This course also includes fallacy and critical analysis of arguments found in daily life. Theories of creative thinking are included. The development techniques, factors and activities related to creative thinking are focused upon.

ILB 113 Arts Appreciation
A study designed to acquaint students with art philosophies their elements, principles and values.

Social Sciences

ILB 101 General Psychology
To introduce students to the fundamental knowledge human behavior and nature; a disciplinary study of the development of the various branches of psychology; fundamental physiology relating to psychology, growth and development; motivation, emotion; perception, learning, attitude, personality development and human relations.

ILB 109 Politics and Government
A study of important political theories; governmental structures and political systems of global influential countries. Thailand and some other countries in Southeast Asia; comparisons of Thai government with selected foreign governments. Students also study Thai constitutions, civil rights and elections.

ILB 110 Intercultural Studies
A comparative study of various contemporary cultures designed to improve students' global perspectives and wider their horizons. Emphasis will be on customs, traditions, arts, beliefs and values.

Mathematics and Science

IIT 201 Computer and Information Technology
An introduction to the computer: hardware and software systems, a study of computer applications, information presentation, computer networks, electronic mail, influence of computers on society and future of computering. Extensive hands-on experiences with a broad range of computer applications will be emphasized.

IMA 101 Fundamental Mathematics
A survey of elementary principles of mathematical problem solving; conceptual ideas using algebra; sets, permutations and combinations; relations and functions; graphs and trees. This course is designed to bring a workable knowledge of the subject that can be used in everyday life of undergraduate students.

ISC 201 Man and Environment
A study of the current and future impact of scientific and technological growth on the environment, society, and economy, investigation of the problems of energy resources, population, and environmental changes; the balance of ecosystem and environment protection that can lead towards a sustainable development.

IPE 101 Classical Music
A study and practice of exercising skills by moving correctly and gracefully to the classical music.

IPE 102 Ballroom Dance
A study and practice of the basic skills and styles of ballroom dance.

IPE 103 Volleyball
A study and practice of the basic skills such as serving, setting, passing and spiking, including basic instructions on rules and team play.

IPE 104 Basketball
A study and practice of the basic skill passing, ball-handling, man-to-man defensive play, basic rules, strategies, and team play.

IPE 105 Badminton
A study and practice of the basic skills such as strokes, single and double play, strategies, rules and interpretations.

IPE 106 Table Tennis
A practice of the basic rules, strategies, and techniques, which also include bat-handling, step movements, and scoring.

A study of the basic knowledge and type of group recreational activities designed to create unity and relaxation among the players as well as to physical fitness.

An introduction to basic classical dancing techniques. This course will familiarize students with classical dance through active participation.

Professional Foundation Courses

IAC 101 General Accounting
A study of the fundamental concepts in accounting and the nature of accounting; the double-entry system; the accounting equation; recording in the general journal; significance of the financial budget; analyzing of financial records and business financial systems such as traveling, hotel and real estate. This course also focuses on financial analysis techniques applied to management planning, control and decision-making including cost and budget procedure.

ICA 222 Modern Presentation Techniques
A practical course concerning processes, techniques and strategies of both formal and informal successful academic and professional presentation. Emphasis on audience and situation analysis, preparation of materials and content, technological utilization, verbal and non-verbal performance as well as creation of other supporting activities.

ICA 223 Public Speaking
A practical course in public speaking. Emphasis on message organization, critical evaluation, evidence and reasoning. Basic principles are applied in a variety of formal and informal public speaking situations.

ICS 202 Introduction to Business Computing
A study of the use of computers in business, with the emphasis on applications of micro-computers in publications, storage, of data, letters, reports, documentation, data files, data feeding, data presentations, printouts, spreadsheet Programmes, report printings, and graftings, all based on software packages.

IEN 203 English for Business Purposes
This course introduces students to the study of business language and its technical terms. Students will also practice the writing of personal and business letters, inquiry letters, letters of persuasion, memorandums, resumes, and application letters.

IHT 221 Introduction to Hotel and Tourism
Concept of Tourism. Types of Tourism. Definition of Tourism and Tourist. Study of the ideas on tourism and the factors which such ideas; the components of tourism, the organization of to the effects of tourism on the socio-economic conditions of the country, and on tourism development. The course also familiarizes the students with an overview of the hospitality industry.

IMG 112 Management
A study of the principle of management; the functions of managers with regard to planning, organizing, staffing, motivating, communicating, coordinating, and controlling.

IMK 212 Marketing
A study of the principles, definitions, scope, significance, functions, and services of marketing; the classification of products and the planning selection of channels of distribution; the pricing policy, the sales promotion; an analysis on selecting the target market; the environment that affects the marketing; means of marketing control.

IST 203 Statistics for Social Sciences
A study of the definition, scope and importance of statistic for social sciences research, data collection, frequency distribution and analysis, the measures of central tendency, the measures of dispersion, with the emphasis on the theories of sampling.

IHT 211 Human Resource Management in Hotel and Tourism
This course serves as an introduction to the concepts function of human resource management in organizations especially in the hotel and tourism industry. It includes organization and coordination of personnel practice and methods: recruitment, training and development, career planning, discipline, employment, working conditions, performance evaluation, health and recreation, compensation and termination. Hence, these interpersonal relationships, small group, and organizations will provide the basis for understanding the dynamics of effective organizational behavior.

IHT 222 Tour and Travel Agency Management
Introduction to travel and tourism services. Tour Operations. Preparation of Tour Itinerary and costing. Guiding techniques. Study of the various forms of tourism management, comprising the target setting, planning the formulation policies appropriate for the management of retailing in the business; the entrepreneurship in tourism, methods of tour management; ticketing; the reservation of boarding rooms at both government and private organizations; the renting of vehicles; passport and visa processing, and other services.

IHT 224 Geography of Tourism
This course analyzes countries; regions and cities attract tourism in terms of physical, geographical and socio-political characteristics of such tourist attractions in order to develop diversity of travel and recreational opportunities including Bangladesh Geography: Natural, Cultural, Heritage and riverine products. The correlation between the geographical condition and the tour management will be covered. Field trips are optional for this course.

IHT 254 Hotel Management and Operations
This course provides an overview of hotel operations, emphasizing on-line Job skills, policies and types of organization. Theoretical management concepts are also covered and operational management issues are examined in relation to the planning, product development, marketing and promotion. Field trips are a part of this course.

IHT 311 Hotel and Tourism Marketing
This course is designed to give an overview of marketing principles related to the hotel and tourism industry. The focus will be on the application of marketing mixes, product planning, salesmanship, hospitality, marketing, sales aids and the use of various marketing strategies and promotional activities to achieve success in the industry.

IHT 321 Sustainable Tourism
A study of sustainable tourism is investigated, including its meaning, background and evolution; effects and benefits of sustainable tourism; management principles of sustainable tourism and the roles of government and private sectors on sustainable tourism development, Ecotourism products of Bangladesh.

ITH 324 Tourist Behavior
A study of the consumer behavior and the demands and behavior of tourists in terms of demographic (age, sex, education, status), religion and culture, emphasizing practical applications of psychological principles. Also, key behavioral factors influencing tourism choices are explored.

IHT 328 Transportation
A study of the fundamental forms of transportation, and the various kinds of transportation by water, land, and air; a study of the principles of the transit system; and analysis of the feature of different vehicles; the time schedule; transportation expense transit fares, sales promotion and the problems in competition and cooperation between the concerned groups.

IHT 332 Airline Business
The information concerning both domestic and international airline companies, including the arrangement of timetables and air fares; a study of the rendering services, reservations, the regulations of immigration and emigration, the customs duties system, and the international agreement related to the airline business; field trips are also provided.

IHT 352 Food Service Operations
This course is intended to give students an introduction to food and beverage operations from planning and purchasing through production, nutrition and service. It includes methods controlling food, beverage and labor costs in food service establishments. Also, banquet and catering service, table setting and types of serving will be covered.

IHT 353 Front Office Operation and Housekeeping
A study of the structure of the Front Office operation in room reservations, reception, registration, assignment of guest rooms and other services and the relation between the Front Office and the Housekeeping Office for preparation of guest rooms, preparation and decoration of the hotel and conference rooms as well as other related services.

IHT 354 Restaurant Management
A study of catering and restaurant management; the duties and responsibilities of the manager and others responsible for the catering services; policy formulations; supervision; demand estimation; sales and marketing; quality control; procurement and calculation of cost and expenditure; and other topics related to controlling of food and beverages.

IHT 411 Computer Reservation Systems
This course emphasizes acquiring operational proficiency with major computer reservation systems (CRS). Using CRS's live and training mode, the course topics addressed include; creating passenger name records (PNRs), itinerary pricing, fare quote queues, and flight information. In addition, non-airline-oriented information including car sales options, hotel index descriptions, hotel availability, tour index and immigrations and customs guide will be covered. This course is equally divided between lectures and travel lab simulations.

IHT 421 Research in Hotel and Tourism
This course aims at providing the background of research methods, data collection and analysis. The students will have opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to the real situations of any selected organization in the hotel and tourism industry.

IHT 465 Practicum Training
Students apply the studied theories to their practicum training at hotels, tour and travel agencies or airline companies, order to get the know-how fr1om real-life situations.
Students are trained by domestic and/or overseas organizations for a minimum of 400 hours or its equivalence including a seminar on training evaluation. The study is under the faculty's supervision and is evaluated by both faculty and training organizations. (A grade of S or U is given.)

IHT 468 Seminar in Hotel and Tourism
This course surveys various issues and events in the hotel and tourism industry. The emphasis is on discussion of selected topics, current problems and trends in hospitality and tourism. The skills-based seminars are designed to integrate and reinforce learning through a variety of media.

Major Electives

IHT 273 Survey of Arts and Cultures
A survey of Western and Eastern arts and cultures is investigated. The focus is on the Asian arts from ancient period to present, featuring: drawings, sculptural arts, architecture and fine arts.

IHT 301 English for Hotel and Tourism
A study of English and technical terms used in the hotel business as well as in tourist services; technical terms relating to art, culture, geography, history, dramatic art, music and architecture; the practice of listening, speaking, writing, and reading comprehension from articles and books concerning hotel management and administration, tourism and daily conversation. Students will also practice working in simulated situations.

IHT 302 Law and Regulations of Hotel and Tourism
This course is an Introduction to laws, traveler's legal rights and regulations applicable to ownership and operation of tourism sectors. Registration of Travel Agencies, Hotels and Restaurants in Bangladesh. National Tourism Policy. Also, the legal aspects of international hospitality and tourism business with special attention to the laws of Thailand and other countries will be covered.

IHT 402 Tourism Planning and Development
A study of travel patterns and market forces and then economic, environmental, social and political impacts. The concepts approaches, processes and models involved in planning and developing a tourist's destination. An investigation of public policy and interrelationships between community and tourism development. Role of National Tourism Organization. Public-private partnership in Tourism.

IHT 403 MICE Management
This course focuses on the roles and responsibilities of professional hospitality meeting planners and hotel convention sales/service managers for purposes of planning or hosting a major convention, a corporate association, or special group meeting event. A detailed review of the factors necessary for successful convention and meeting is conducted with emphasis on the various methods employed to enhance both programme and attendance. Group project will be assigned.

IHT 404 Resort Development and Management
This course is designed to give the students an understanding of resort development including planning and operation of individual destination resorts. Analysis of resort concept, history, master planning, environmental impact, facility design, maintenance and operational management will be covered.

IHT 490 Independent Study
Individualized study of a selected topic on hotel or tourism industry under faculty supervision.

A study of the fundamental language structure and general vocabulary used in everyday life; the practice of listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.

IFR 102 French II
Prerequisite: IFP 101 or Dean's Approval
This course focuses on the proper use of the French language structure in grammar, vocabulary, idiom and writing, listening, speaking, and reading for communication.

IGR 101 German I
A study of the fundamental structure and general vocabulary; the practice of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for education.

IGR 102 German II
Prerequisite: IGR 101 or Dean's Approval
A study of the proper structure, grammar, vocabulary, and idiom; the practice of listening, speaking, reading and writing for ommunication.

ISP 101 Spanish 1
A study of the fundamental language structure and general vocabulary; a practice of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

ISP 102 Spanish II
Prerequisite: ISP 101 or Dean's Approval
A study of the proper use of the Spanish language structure, grammar vocabulary, and idiom, including listening, speaking, reading and writing complex sentences.

ITH 101 Bangla Language for Foreigners I
Intensive spoken and written Bangla for beginners. The students focus on the conversational skills sufficient to communicate in everyday life's activities. Elements of Bangla language are also taught in preparation of comprehensive studies.

ITH 102 Bangla Language for Foreigners II
Prerequisite: ITH 101 or Dean's Approval
A study of proper use of Bangla language structure, grammar, vocabulary, and idioms, including comprehensive skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Bangla at a proficient level of communication. The students also learn to understand the cultural contexts of the language to be able to enter conversations and discussions properly.

IHT 450 Dissertation/Project

All BA candidates require to undertake supervised study and research culminating in a dissertation/project in their field of specialization. The completed dissertation/project should be bind and printed in accordance with the regulations of IBAIS University.
